Chipped and cracked tiles can be a major eyesore. They not only take away from the look of your installation but from the room as a whole. However, oftentimes you can get away without having to remove any tile whatsoever, saving you time and money.
When damage is simply the result of something being dropped on your floor or banged into your wall tiles accidentally, and not the result of a more serious problem, there is a painless option. A can of touch-up paint may be all that you need to keep your tiles looking new.
The easiest way to get started is to take a trip to your local home or paint store. If you can, bring an old tile from the same installation with you. Doing so will allow you to have it matched with the best enamel paint shade to camouflage the damage. A small can is more than enough and don’t forget to buy a little brush as well.
Lightly dip your brush into the paint and dab it onto the cracks and chips you’d like to hide. Just be careful not to get any on the tile grout. Then take a paper towel and wipe off any extra paint. And that’s it, all you have to do is wait for it to dry and enjoy the results.
For a temporary fix, you might even be able to get away with using nail polish. If you have it in a color that is relatively similar at home already, you won’t even have to leave the house. For white tile, correction fluid or whiteout is also a really simple way to touch up damage on a dime.
When dealing with porcelain tile there are also touch-up paints made specifically for this material. Typically these are very cheap and manufactured to be able to deal with very high heat making them ideal for jobs on backsplashes and near stoves. There are also paints that can be used for ceramic, porcelain, and many types of natural stone including marble tiles.
While a quick touch-up is not a final solution by any means when the budget is tight and time is limited it can be the easiest choice. It may also help you to keep damage disguised if you are unable to find replacement tile of the same material, color, or style in your area right away and are in the process of waiting for it to be delivered or just a chance to go shopping. So before you decide on tile removal consider a touch-up first!
