Carpet tiles are an alternative to standard carpeting. Each square tile is installed individually to create a carpeted flooring surface. However like with all flooring options you’ll need to know both the advantages and disadvantages of carpet tiles before you can decide whether they are the right choice for your needs.
Advantages Of Carpet Tiles
Install Them On Your Own
You won’t have to pay for any expensive installation fees when installing carpet tiles. They are designed so that installation is an easy DIY job that won’t need any skills or tools. To make the job as simple as possible many options have a peel and stick backing, use adhesive, or are interlocking.
Remove Individual Tiles
One of the most useful benefits of carpet tiles is the fact that you can remove them individually after installation without any hassle. This can be very handy when a certain section or specific tiles need a more thorough cleaning. It also allows you to remove and replace any damaged or worn tiles without having to purchase an entirely new carpet.
Modular
Because they are interchangeable, carpet tiles, make creating your ideal flooring space much simpler. You can mix and match with various colors, shades, patterns, and designs. (This feature makes them an especially popular choice for businesses who want custom flooring that has specific color arrangements.) And of course, if you decide you want to change things up, you can always re-arrange your tiles.
Disadvantages Of Carpet Tiles
Seams
Unlike traditional carpet flooring, with carpet tiles, the seams are typically visible. This means you can see the square outline of each individual tile. Whether or not this is a disadvantage though comes down to your preference. You may prefer this look, but regardless it is worth keeping in mind.
If you are sure you want tiles but prefer a cohesive look, there are options that can help seams to blend in well, such as those with patterns or designs that are made to align from one tile to the next. These can make seams much less obvious.
Not For Moist Areas
As a general rule just about all carpet options are meant to be used in areas that don’t get a lot of moisture or wetness. That’s because carpeting is an absorbent material. And wet carpeting can lead to the growth of mold. So if you are looking for something for bathroom or kitchen floors, standard carpet tile flooring isn’t recommended.
There are actually what are known as indoor outdoor carpet tiles which are commonly used in wet areas such as decks, patios, garages, and laundry rooms. These are designed specifically for superior drainage.
Allergens
Just like with water and moisture, carpeting of all types can absorb allergens. And if you have allergies this could cause them to flare up. Because carpet tile squares are easy to clean, they do make a better alternative than wall-to-wall carpet flooring when allergies are a concern.
You now know the advantages and disadvantages of carpet tiles. With this information, you’ll be able to make an educated decision on whether or not they are the best choice for your flooring upgrade!
